Fire crews scheduled to burn 55 acres of UCSC meadowland
When one of UC Santa Cruz's two fire engines rolls out of its garage on Tuesday, July 22, it will be heading off to set a fire, not stop one. That's the day the campus fire department plans to team up with the California Department of Forestry and other local crews to burn 55 acres of UCSC meadowland off Empire Grade Road.

Millennium Committee charged with planning a campus for the 21st century
In a letter to the campus community, Chancellor Greenwood announces the appointment of the Millennium Committee. The committee is charged with identifying vital issues for campus planning in the new century.

Staff organization to ask Board of Regents for representation
Leaders of the organization representing staff at the University of California's nine campuses will be asking the Board of Regents to consider allowing a staff representative to sit at the table alongside faculty representatives and join in the board's discussion of issues relevant to staff employees.

Regents' committee recommends UC partnership with public schools
A committee of the UC Board of Regents has approved implementation of a plan to expand the university's outreach to California's public schools with the goal of qualifying more students for UC admission.

Graduate Student Association names new officers
The Graduate Student Association (GSA) Council has elected new officers for the 1997-98 academic year.

New director named to the Office of Sponsored Projects
In a letter to the campus community, associate vice chancellor for research Jim Gill announces that the campus has recruited Bill Clark as director of the Office of Sponsored Projects.
