Re: New Director for the Office of Sponsored Projects

Dear Colleagues,

The campus is fortunate to have successfully recruited Mr. Bill Clark as our new Director of the Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP), effective July 28. Bill comes to us from San Francisco State University where he has been Director of the Office of Sponsored Projects for nine years. He also has coordinated activities between SFSU's OSP, Foundation, Advancement Office, and College of Extended Education.

Bill holds a B.A. from Georgetown and a Masters in Public Policy from Berkeley. He rose from being a Volunteer to Deputy Director of the Peace Corps in Peru, and has managed information systems and administered research for State of California agencies.

Bill's job at UCSC will include supervising the OSP, overseeing all proposals and awards for externally sponsored grants and contracts, liaising with other campus units involved in research administration (e.g., business offices, extramural funds accounting, licensing, advancement, conflict of interest, human and animal subjects), being the campus Patent Coordinator and responsible for most industrial research relationships, and working with me with on research policy and initiatives. Probably he will play evolving roles with the MBEST Center at Fort Ord and the Engineering School.

The search ended successfully because of the effectiveness of the OSP staff, Search Committee members (Bruce Bridgeman, Elizabeth Capehart, Mary DiFranco, Joel Ferguson, Glenn Millhauser, and Jocelyn Nelson), and my assistant, Lynda Denevan. Thank you, all.

OSP staff deserve your special thanks for keeping things going despite being even more short-staffed than usual since Mark left. David Mears, who was Acting Director of the Sponsored Projects Office during April-June, has returned to his post as overall Research Administrator for the UC system. In addition to overseeing OSP, David also undertook several special projects and provided strategic advice about the organization of research administration at UCSC.

I regret to inform you that Jocelyn Nelson decided in May to leave OSP in order to work in Internal Audit. Recruitment for her replacement closes this week, allowing Bill to help in selection. All of us will miss Jocelyn, but especially the social science PIs.

Finally, OSP is one of the many units moving this summer. The exact destination is not definite but is likely to be in Social Sciences 2 (College Ten). This is better for the social scientists, less convenient for the engineers, and about neutral for others. We will hold an open house in the Fall so that you can learn where to find us and meet Bill all at once.
