Bruce McPherson to receive "legislator of the year" award from UC alumni groups

Alumni Associations of the University of California (AAUC) will honor California State Senator Bruce McPherson this month with an AAUC Legislator of the Year Award.

McPherson (R-Santa Cruz) was one of four California legislators chosen to receive the AAUC award, which is being given out for the first time this year. The award recognizes "key legislators who have been most supportive of UC and higher education," said Carol Lacey, governmental relations representative for UCSC.

Also chosen for the award were: Denise Moreno Ducheny (D-San Diego) and Brooks Firestone (R-Los Olivos) in the Assembly, and Jack O'Connell (D-Carpinteria) in the Senate.

AAUC will honor the award winners on April 14 at a reception during its annual legislative conference, taking place at the California Railroad Museum in Sacramento.

McPherson, who visited the UCSC campus in March for a public meeting, was recently appointed vice chair of the senate's Committee on Education. The 13-member committee hears all bills relating to K-12 education, higher education, and educational personnel.
