Chancellor's Inaugural Symposium: "Achieving Excellence Through Diversity"

Free and open to the public*

Keynote speaker Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, will lead a discussion on the best practices in diversity, access, and inclusion, with a particular focus on science and engineering.

Dr. Jackson will be honored with the third UC Santa Cruz Foundation Medal, an award recognizing individuals of exceptionally distinguished achievements whose work and contribution to society illustrate the ideals and vision of UC Santa Cruz. (See detailed program.)

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4
Chancellor's Inaugural Symposium: Breakout sessions
8:30 a.m.
Bhojwani Room, University Center

Campus community invited to attend three sessions for group discussion and engagement following brief remarks. Location of each session is listed in the detailed program.

Breakout sessions will cover:
What is diversity? Thinking at the edge. Structured dialogue from different perspectives and plenary discussion aimed at developing consensus on what the campus means by diversity. Participation by students, staff, and faculty.
UC Faculty Diversity Study. Series of summary presentations on scholarly research on diversity presented by UCSC faculty, including presentations on institutional and social issues.
Teaching a diverse student body. Conversations among undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty on impact of diversity for teaching and learning. (Students and faculty sharing role of facilitators.)
