June 19, 2000 Making the News An article in Chemical and Engineering News featured the research of professor of chemistry and biochemistry Glenn Millhauser. Millhauser and his coworkers are using a technique called electron spin resonance to study protein structures. Karl Gebhardt, a Hubble postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics, was quoted in an article in the New York Times about research on supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxies conducted by Gebhardt and an international team of collaborators. Patricia Zavella of community studies was quoted in an article in the Arizona Republic on machismo and Latino culture. The article was reprinted in the Mexico City News. Research astronomer and operations manager at Lick Observatory Remington Stone appeared on KNAX's Good Morning Sacramento, the top-rated morning television show in the Sacramento area. The show did a live broadcast from Lick Observatory in May, and Stone served as the gracious host. A final project in an art class taught by Nobuho Nagasawa turned into a memorable Good Times cover June 8. The cover story, about Y2K graduates, was illustrated by an image of five students walking off into a grassy meadow, carrying tool boxes and wearing short-sleeved blue workshirts. The props were part of the students' final project, for which they each designed individual artworks to give to their classmates and Nagasawa. The toolboxes were a gift from Nagasawa. The students pictured were Peter Hokama, Virgina Kleker, Sean Horchy, Amy Bunker, and Holly Chang Gummelt. A front-page story in the Santa Cruz Sentinel on the Center for Adaptive Optics featured Jerry Nelson, professor of astronomy and astrophysics and director of the center, Sandra Faber, University Professor of astronomy and astrophysics, and Anthony Misch, a specialist at Lick Observatory. Elaine Wheeler of UC's online college prep program was interviewed by reporters from wired.com and Crosstalk.
