UC and Technical Unit reach tentative agreement on first contract

The University of California and the University Professional and Technical Employees--Communication Workers of America, Local 9119 (UPTE) reached tentative agreement on July 13 for a first contract covering 4,000 Technical Unit employees systemwide.

Technical Unit employees voted to be represented by UPTE in the fall of 1994. The university and UPTE have been working over the last 30 months to negotiate a first contract.

If ratified, the contract will be in effect through June 30, 2000, with reopener bargaining on wages plus three articles per party in July 1998 and 1999. Union members will be asked to ratify the contract this month after a series of informational meetings at the nine campuses, the Office of the President, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Included in the systemwide bargaining unit are electronics and health-and-safety technicians, laboratory assistants, editors, writers, firefighters, and computer operators and specialists, among others. Some 185 employees at UCSC would be covered by the contract.

A summary of the contract provisions will soon be available from UCSC's Labor Relations Office.
