Salinas resident sponsors children's summer classes at UCSC Arboretum
Longtime Salinas resident Helen Johnson has sponsored a series of summer nature classes at the UCSC Arboretum for schoolchildren from the Salinas, Watsonville, and Santa Cruz areas.

Guild of Natural Science Illustrators to hold annual meeting at UCSC
The Science Communication Program will host this year's meeting of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, a worldwide organization with some 1,100 members. The meeting, open to registrants only, takes place on campus the week of August 11.

UC and Technical Unit reach tentative agreement on first contract
The University of California and the University Professional and Technical Employees--Communication Workers of America, Local 9119 (UPTE) reached tentative agreement on July 13 for a first contract covering 4,000 Technical Unit employees systemwide.

Research and care facility for oiled wildlife dedicated with tour, ceremony
About 150 people attended a dedication ceremony on July 21 for the state's new Oiled Wildlife Veterinary Care and Research Center, the nation's first facility designed to rescue and treat sea otters and other marine animals injured in oil spills.

Firefighters carry out successful controlled burn
Firefighters from UC Santa Cruz, the California Department of Forestry (CDF), and other local crews set fire to nearly 55 acres of campus meadowland in late July.

UC and Mexico agree on joint research and education pact
The University of California and Mexico's National Council on Science and Technology have entered into the most comprehensive research and education collaboration ever established between a U.S. university and Mexico.
