RE: Announcement of new administrative appointments

I am very pleased to announce two appointments that will be effective July 1. Professor Marc S. Mangel has agreed to serve as associate vice chancellor for planning and programs, and Professor William A. (Bill) Ladusaw has accepted the post of Cowell College provost.

Marc Mangel, professor of environmental studies, came to UCSC in 1996 from UC Davis, where he was director of the Center for Population Biology (1989-93). His past administrative experience also includes a term as chair of the Mathematics Department of UC Davis (1984-89).

William A. Ladusaw, professor of linguistics, will serve as the eighth provost of Cowell College. He arrived at UCSC in 1984 from the University of Iowa, and during his tenure here, he has served the campus as chair of both the Linguistics Department (1991-92) and of the Language Studies Program (1991-92 and 1994-95) and as chair of the Academic Senate Committee on Education Abroad Program (1993-95). From 1988 to 1990 he served as academic preceptor of Cowell College.

Marc succeeds economics professor Carl Walsh, and Bill succeeds Carol Freeman, senior lecturer in writing. I want to thank both Carl and Carol for their excellent service, and I wish them continued success as they return to full-time pursuit of their respective academic interests.
