Among the honored guests at the luncheon was UCSC Chancellor Emeritus Karl Pister, an engineer who helped revitalize the campus's plans for a School of Engineering during his tenure. Pister voiced his appreciation that the new school, planned since UCSC was founded, has come to fruition. Recalling the budgetary difficulties that held back the school in the early 1990s, Pister described himself as "the right man at the wrong time."
