Celebrating Women's History

On Monday, March 31, Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood addressed a gathering of the Capitol Women's Group at an event sponsored by the Office of Lt. Governor Gray Davis in the State Capitol Building. Among those present were members of the California Legislature, directors of governmental offices, and Capitol staff.

Lt. Governor Davis introduced the chancellor and at the conclusion of her remarks presented her with a framed certificate honoring her achievements and recognizing her distinction as a scientist and policy leader.

The chancellor's address was scheduled by the Lt. Governor's Office to celebrate Women's History Month. Her remarks included recognition of notable achievements by women in business, education, and government during the past century, including mention of a number of UCSC's most prominent female faculty. While celebrating advances for women, the chancellor also sounded a cautionary note that progress for many women may be seriously impeded by the implementation of welfare reform, which could limit the ability of poor women to pursue a university education.
