Photo of multi-object spectrograph at Lick Observatory A close-up of MOS reveals bundles of white optical fibers. A precisely engineered robot, developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, aligns the end of each fiber to the coordinates of different stars, galaxies, or other objects that an astronomer wishes to study simultaneously. The robot can shuffle dozens of fibers into exquisitely accurate new positions within five minutes.
