Photo of multi-object spectrograph at Lick Observatory

Light-carrying fibers from MOS run down the side of the telescope and into this spectrograph, donated to Lick Observatory by the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. The spectrograph spreads each packet of light into its component colors, or "spectrum," for analysis. Contained within a spectrum are clues about an object's composition, velocity, and distance from earth.
