Tree Stewardship at UCSC
Trees are a fundamental part of the character and appeal of the UCSC campus. Trees are precious to the UCSC community. For those who walk through the woods, those that care for the trees, and those that plan for the future, the best possible stewardship of UCSC trees is a common goal.
Did You Know?
- The UCSC main campus is approximately 2000 acres. Approximately 1400 of those acres are forested.
- Just in the immediate vicinity (within 100 feet) of UCSC buildings, there are approximately 10,000 trees of planted and native origin.
- Some 40 years on, is difficult to tell some of the redwood trees planted with early campus projects from surrounding native stands.
- Campus redwood trees are commonly 150 feet tall or more.
- Much of the Cowell Ranch property, what is now UCSC, was clear-cut by the late 19th century. The forest growth we now see at UCSC is second or even third growth since that time. A few trees still remain that survived the original logging.
