Author Greg Sarris to be fellow-in-residence at Stevenson College

Stevenson College has traditionally set aside one week during the winter or spring quarter for the Adlai E. Stevenson Fellow-in-Residence Program, an annual event that brings a nationally known figure to the UCSC campus.

Established in 1983 in memory of politician and ambassador Adlai E. Stevenson, the Fellow-in-Residence Program has hosted an impressive roster of past fellows: former senator George McGovern; former congresswoman Bella Abzug; Arthur Fleming, secretary of H.E.W. in the Eisenhower Cabinet; Pat Conroy, notable author of novels and screenplays; Peter Shaffer, prolific author of plays and novels; popular singer Carole King, and many others.

Of American Indian, Filipino, and Jewish descent, Sarris was adopted at birth and raised in both Indian and white families. He is the author of Keeping Slug Woman Alive: Essays Toward a Holistic Approach to American Indian Texts, Mabel McKay: Weaving the Dream, and Grand Avenue. He is editor of Rattles and Clappers: An Anthology of California Indian Writing.

Sarris adapted his latest novel, Grand Avenue, into a three-hour movie, which he co-executive produced with Robert Redford for HBO.

Sarris will show the award-winning movie on March 3 at 7 p.m. in the Stevenson Dining Hall. The UCSC campus community is welcome to attend this event. Admission is free.

The Fellow-in-Residence Program enables students, faculty, staff, and community members to meet with leading figures of our time to discuss contemporary political and cultural issues. For more information about the scheduled events, contact the Stevenson Provost Office at (408) 459-2638.
