Instruction begins Thursday; first-day facts
UCSC is expecting an opening-day enrollment of approximately 10,335 students, compared to a first-day enrollment of 10,136 last fall. Of the expected 10,335 students, 3,000 will be new students (compared to 2,716 new students last fall).

A letter to the university community from UC President Atkinson
With Proposition 209, the California Civil Rights Initiative, on the state ballot in November, President Atkinson discusses the steps the university has taken recently to continue to serve all Californians.

New year brings new faces to campus
Most people already know we have a new chancellor. But they may not be aware that several other high-level appointments were made since the end of the 1995-96 academic year. Two provosts, an Academic Senate chair, and a vice chancellor are among the new appointments.

Chancellor Greenwood was the featured speaker at this year's convocation for new students, which took place on Sunday, September 22, in the Upper Quarry. The chancellor's speech can be accessed here.

Retreat renews campus planning effort
Last Tuesday, September 17, approximately 120 members of the campus community met to exchange ideas about how UCSC, as a research university entering the 21st century, can meet its obligations to the state and nation. A Web site has been developed to inform the campus of the planning activities and solicit comment.
