October 3, 2002 To: Campus Community From: M.R.C. Greenwood, Chancellor Re: Passing of Norman O. BrownDear Colleagues, With sadness, I am writing to inform you of the death of one of the campus's most distinguished luminaries, Professor Norman O. Brown. A leader of our intellectual community since 1968, Professor Brown ("Nobby" to his friends) was a major figure in 20th century thinking and scholarship. He was 89. A biographical retrospective of his life, including highlights of his academic achievements, is posted on the campus press release site at: http://www.ucsc.edu/news_events/press_releases/text.asp?pid=211. A celebration of his life will take place October 19 at 3 p.m. The location of the celebration has not yet been determined. When the location is known, it will be posted at the web address, above. In the meantime, please join me in remembering a great man and wonderful friend and colleague to many on this campus and beyond.
