September 18, 2002 To: Campus Community From: M.R.C. Greenwood, Chancellor Re: $9.1M landmark grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.Dear Campus Colleagues, I am delighted to announce that UC Santa Cruz has received a grant of $9.1 M from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation -- the largest single grant from a foundation and the largest private contribution in the campus' history. The grant will fund the new Laboratory for Adaptive Optics, which will develop and test prototypes of cutting-edge adaptive optics equipment. The lab will be the first comprehensive university laboratory of its kind in the country, complementing UCSC'S national Center for Adaptive Optics (CfAO) and UC Observatories/Lick Observatory. More details are available: http://www.ucsc.edu/currents/02-03/09-16/moore.html The grant is a marvelous asset for the entire campus, and all of us will benefit from this newest distinction. It represents major acknowledgement of the university's strengths and eminence in astronomy, astronomical instrumentation, and adaptive optics. Please join me in thanking Professor Claire Max, CfAO Director Jerry Nelson, and Professor Joe Miller, Director of UCO/Lick Observatories. Professor Max is principal investigator and Professor Nelson and Professor Miller are co-principal investigators. Appreciation also is due to University Relations Vice Chancellor Ron Suduiko, Associate Vice Chancellor Paul Prokop and his colleagues on the development team for their hard work in helping bring this momentous grant to the campus. Congratulations to everyone whose effort has resulted in this wonderful news!
