University Club lunch

Join campus faculty and staff for a luncheon at University House on April 27. Meet friends there or reserve a table as a group. The buffet lunch is held at noon and includes a variety of sandwiches, assorted salads, fresh fruit tarts, and beverages. The cost is $10 and reservations are required by 5 p.m. on April 25; call (831) 459-5271. The final University Club lunch of the year will be on May 18.

Job Shadow 2000

Monterey County high school students will be coming to campus on May 24 for Job Shadow 2000. As it has in past years, the program matches students with faculty and staff members for a part of a day so students have the opportunity to learn about a professional career on a one-to-one basis. Treat yourself to a lunchtime massage

The Holistic Health Program is offering chair massages from some of the program's talented students at several campus locations on Thursdays in May. Each massage lasts 20 minutes and costs $10. Dates and locations are as follows:

  • May 4 - OPERS Conference Room at the East Field House
  • May 11 - University Business Park, 2801 Mission St. extension
  • May 18 - Cowell Student Health Center Conference Room
  • May 25 - OPERS Conference Room at the East Field House

Times are the same for all dates and locations: 11:30, 11:55, 12:20, 12:45, 1:10. Reservations must be made in advance by calling (831) 459-2668; no refunds will be given.

UCSC hosting women's water polo championships

The collegiate women's water polo national championships will be held this year at UCSC May 5-7. Twenty games are scheduled for the tournament (eight on Friday, eight on Saturday, four on Sunday). Seed pool play on Friday and Saturday will determine championship pairings for Saturday afternoon and Sunday. All games will take place at the East Field House pool; tickets are $1 per day for students; $4 per day for adults; $10 for an adult tournament pass; free for children 12 and under. Lecture Series at Seymour Center concludes

drawing of a whale The Inaugural Lecture Series at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center concludes on April 25 with talks by professor of biology Dan Costa on "Marine Mammals and Noise in the Ocean: Lessons Learned from the ATOC Experiment" and by professor of environmental toxicology Russ Flegel on "Impacts of Climate Change on Contamination in Coastal Waters." The lectures take place at the Seymour Center from 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $6/general admission; $5/Friends of Long Marine Lab members. For tickets, call (831) 459-3799. Looking for a summer of fun for your school-age children?

Family Student Housing will have a summer program for school-age children running from June 19 to August 25. The program will be open Monday-Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and feature nutritious meals, weekly swimming on campus, a Life Lab garden, visiting artists, and field trips, including trips to Shakespeare Santa Cruz and the Seymour Marine Discovery Center. Priority is based on the application date for fee-for-service spaces. Variable-length contracts are available. For more information, call (831) 459-4085.

Campus will observe Veterans Day, November 11

In February President Atkinson announced that the University of California will honor all veterans by designating Veterans Day, November 11, as one of its official holidays beginning in fall quarter 2000 (UC Newswire release). In order to incorporate the holiday and meet the minimum days of instruction, classes at UCSC will begin on September 20, rather than the previously scheduled September 21.

April broadcast schedule for UCSC Forum

UCSC Forum, which features the best of UCSC lectures and programs, airs at 8 p.m. each Sunday and 4:30 p.m. each Wednesday on Community TV of Santa Cruz County, Channel 72.

The schedule for April is as follows:

  • April 23: Gildas Hamel: "Jesus: Stories from Galilee" (repeat) (rebroadcast April 26)
  • April 30: Gary Lease: "What are the humanities and why do they matter: The case of religion and public life" (repeat) (rebroadcast May 3)
