Julie Bettie

Julie Bettie, assistant professor of sociology, is a cowinner of the 2001 Sex and Gender Distinguished Article Award for her article, "Women without Class: Chicas, Cholas, Trash, and the Presence/Absence of Class Identity," which appeared in the fall 2000 edition of Signs: The Journal of Women in Culture and Society. The award was presented at the Sex and Gender Business Meeting during the American Sociological Association's annual meeting in Anaheim, August 18-21.

Bettie also recently received an award for $34,750 from the Spencer Foundation to support a project entitled, "Women without Class: Race, Identity, and Performance Among White and Mexican-American Youth."


Lori Kletzer

Lori Kletzer, associate professor of economics, testified before the Senate Finance Committee's Subcommittee on Trade on the reauthorization of Trade Adjustment Assistance on July 20. She discussed what happens to workers displaced from import-competing industries and her wage insurance proposal. Kletzer spent the past 12 months in Washington, D.C., as a visiting fellow of the Institute for International Economics.
