Fall Bike to Work/School Day - Thursday, October 5

Beat the traffic blues, parking hassles, and the high price of gasoline by riding your bicycle. Join the fall Bike to Work Day on Thursday, October 5. Bicyclists will be treated to free breakfast at 12 sites throughout Santa Cruz County, free commuter massages, free bike mechanic repair, and a chance to win a trip around the world.

Light systems, including a bike headlight, a rear flashing light, and batteries will be on sale for the fabulous price of $5 at selected Bike to Work Day breakfast sites. The low-cost bike lights are provided by the Community Traffic Safety Coalition.

Family Fair this Sunday, October 8

Children's folk music, dances, pony rides, a barbecue, and a petting zoo are just a few of the fun activities offered at the Family Fair, taking place Sunday, October 8th, from noon to 4 p.m. on the playing field in front of Family Student Housing. The fair is free and open to all students, faculty, and staff and their families. At the fair, children can get their faces painted, watch professional entertainers, watch a juggler at work, get a balloon hat, do art, climb through an obstacle course, or bounce around in one of two Astro Jumps.

The fair is sponsored by Housing, Dining, and Child Care Services, the Chancellor, and Student Affairs. For more information, call Gail Bloebaum at (831) 459-4085.

Realize your full potential as an athlete

Sports psychologist and author Jerry Lynch will give a presentation titled "Running & Racing with a Warriors Heart: The Secret Strategy of Champions" on Monday, October 2, at 7 p.m. in the Cowell College Conference Room. Lynch has been associated with hundreds of world and national champions over the past 25 years, and he's learned about what it takes to compete at your best and win. This 1 1/2 hour clinic will help you get the most out of yourself, experience passion for your sport, and achieve a more joyful approach to your workouts. A book signing will follow the event. UCSC Recreation and Teton Gravity Research on Saturday, October 7, at

Professor Hankamer receives birthday tribute

In honor of his 60th birthday, linguistics professor Jorge Hankamer received a festschrift from dozens of colleagues, friends, students, and former students. The festschrift is traditionally a volume of writings by different authors that honors a specific person. This particular publication, masterminded by Linguistics Department faculty and staff, is electronic and consists of roughly 45 "squibs" (short papers on linguistics) and birthday greetings; the site even includes digital movies and a watercolor jpeg. Noontime yoga classes

The Recreation Office is offering drop-in fitness classes this fall.

  • Yoga classes take place every Friday through December 8. Classes are from noon to 1 p.m. in the Martial Arts Room at the East Field House.
  • Yoga /Pilates begins Wednesday, October 4, and will run every Wednesday through December 6. Classes are from noon to 1 p.m. in the Activity Room at the East Field House.
