Benjamin Friedlander

Professor of electrical engineering Benjamin Friedlander has received the IEEE Third Millennium Medal from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The IEEE's Signal Processing Society selected Friedlander for the award "in recognition and appreciation of valued services and outstanding contributions."

K. C. Fung

Economist K. C. Fung has received an $80,000 two-year grant from the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation to study trade and investment links between mainland China and Taiwan. Fung also coauthored a paper titled, "Can a Cleaner Environment Be Good for Business?," with UCSC Ph.D. recipient Andrea Maechler. The paper, which was presented at the National Bureau of Economic Research last summer, has been accepted for presentation at the Eighth World Congress of the Econometrics Society in Seattle this August. The paper was partially funded by a grant from the Social Sciences Division.

Leta Miller

Professor of music Leta Miller has recently delivered three public lectures on the works of composer Lou Harrison: a preconcert lecture for the San Francisco Symphony's all-Harrison concert in June and two earlier in the spring at the Royal Academy of Music in London and at Keele University in Staffordshire, U.K.
