June 4, 2001 Take Note It's time to renew parking permits and programs This year Transportation and Parking Services is encouraging faculty and staff to apply online for 2001-02 parking permits or commute programs. TAPS will not be sending out paper packets, except by request. To receive your permit or programs, including bus passes, in a timely manner, TAPS requests that you submit an online application by Friday, June 22. New permit options for 2001-02 include: Academic Year "A" permits, Academic Quarterly "A" permits, Academic Quarterly "A" Limited Day permits, Academic Year "R" permits, Academic Quarterly "R" permits, Quarterly Motorcycle permits and 1/2 packets of "Daily-A-Permits (scratch-off) for employees hired less than 50% time. Another parking program being offered for the first time is the Annual West Perimeter-Lot 127 permit. 250 permits will be available by lottery for Lot 127, formerly the West Remote lot. The lottery deadline is June 15, 2001. Permits for this lot are two-thirds the cost of an "A permit and are offered on an annual basis only. A new vanpool is available to Live Oak commuters with an 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule. Surplus items on sale at the Bay Tree Bookstore The Bay Tree Bookstore will be moving into its new facility in early July, and a number of old furniture items and and fixtures will no longer be needed in the new location, including bookcases, cash register stands, counters, metal display islands, desks, and more. Campus units and offices have first opportunity to purchase these surplus items. All fixtures for sale are labeled as of June 4 and will be available for campus units to pick up as soon as the bookstore moves or, in some cases, earlier. Women at Work offers group tickets for Shakespeare Santa Cruz Again this year, Women at Work is offering staff and faculty the opportunity to purchase reduced-price group tickets for three performances of Shakespeare Santa Cruz. Summer fitness classes at the OPERS Wellness Center Adult Weight Training This class is designed for those who have very little or no experience in the weight room. In this class you will learn the basic concepts and principles of weight training and how to apply them into your own personal workout. Ages: Must be at least 18 years of age. Dates: M, W, F June 25th - August 3rd (no class on July 4th) Times: 5:30 - 6:45 p.m. Fee: $95 Senior Fitness This class will teach basic cardiovascular strength and flexibility exercises. It will focus on core muscle strength and balance. Class topics will include the benefits of exercise with aging and also special considerations to exercise (hypertension, diabetes, low back pain, obesity, and orthopedic problems). Ages: 55 or older. Clothing drive for women getting out of jail Getting Out and Staying Out (GOSO), an organization that helps women being released from incarceration, is having a clothing drive on Wednesday, June 6. Donation trucks will be at the corner of Bay and High Streets from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to collect women's, men's, and children's clothing; small furniture; and kitchenware. Student Affairs holds naming contest for Bookstore/Graduate Commons area A contest to name the new plaza area where the bookstore, grad commons, ethnic resource centers, career center, and student union will reside was conducted in May by the Area Council, an advisory committee to Student Affairs. The council is charged with making recommendations on the physical and fiscal management of the plaza area and bringing the various plaza occupants together for shared input on the space. Over 400 students and staff participated. The council may or may not use the suggestions gathered through the contest. Head coach Allison Slade to hold girls summer basketball camp Women's basketball head coach Allison Slade and her staff and players are offering a summer basketball camp July 30-August 2 for girls in 3rd through 8th grade. The camp will take place at the West Field House on campus and the hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with drop-off as early as 8 a.m. and pickup as late as 5 p.m. The players will be divided into two divisions, 3rd through 5th grade, and 6th through 8th grade. A typical camp day will include ball handling and shooting drills, games, shooting contests, a guest speaker, and the opportunity to cool off in the UCSC pool. The cost is $150.
