May 28, 2001 AppointmentsHiroshi FukuraiHiroshi Fukurai, associate professor of sociology, has been appointed director of the UC Studies Center in Tokyo, Japan, for the Education Abroad Program. His two-year term begins July 1. Greg HarshawGreg Harshaw has been selected as the new athletics director. He takes over for Sean Sullivan, who has been filling in since Mark Majeski left the position last fall. Harshaw has held a wide variety of positions, including audit specialist for the California Department of Health, assistant director of the Community Arts Program in San Diego, athletic director at Dominican College, director of Diamond Vision Operations for the Oakland Athletics Baseball Company, director of the Computer Graphics Department at Laney College, associate producer of Seriee Limitee, and program director of USTA/NJTL/Youth Tennis Association. He has been self-employed as a sports marketing consultant since 1991. Harshaw has a B.A. in physical education and a master's in sports administration. Tom VaniThomas Vani, vice chancellor for business and administrative services, has been
appointed to a UC systemwide task force charged with "finding ways to make housing
more affordable and available for students, senior staff members, and faculty."
The task force consists of 20 members, representing campuses, faculty, students,
UC Board of Regents, and local communities; it is chaired by Joseph Mullinix, UC
senior vice president, and Sue Johnson, Regents' chair. Full
