UC Santa Cruz Research

SCIPP researchers specialize in the development of highly sensitive detectors and electronics used to track subatomic particles. Their detectors are used in high-energy physics experiments conducted in massive particle accelerator facilities and also in astrophysics experiments.

In the photo at left, SCIPP researcher Robert Johnson holds a silicon strip detector and a detector panel designed for use in the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST), a space-based telescope NASA plans to launch within the next decade. The detectors will record gamma rays emitted by neutron stars, black holes, pulsars, supernova remnants, and other intriguing astrophysical sources.
