Negotiations start for nuclear labs

The University of California opened negotiations this past summer with the U.S. Department of Energy to continue the university's management of the Lawrence Berkeley, Lawrence Livermore, and Los Alamos national laboratories.

The Board of Regents authorized the negotiations in June after receiving indication of faculty support for continuing the management of the Livermore and Los Alamos laboratories in particular. In a vote taken in May by UCSC's Academic Senate, 30 members voted in favor of UC's management of the labs and 16 voted against.

The university has managed the labs as a public service since their inception, a total of nearly 54 years. The current contracts with the U.S. Department of Energy run concurrently for five years and expire in September 1997.
