Re: The death of Chancellor Emeritus Angus E. Taylor

Dear Colleagues:

Hoping to share the news on campus before it is printed in the newspapers, I am writing to let you know of the death of Chancellor Emeritus Angus E. Taylor. He died at age 87, in a Berkeley hospital late yesterday afternoon. The news release gives an extensive summary of his very distinguished career, including his service as Chancellor of UCSC from February 1976 through July 1977.

Plans for memorial arrangements will be announced later. The family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the UC Santa Cruz Foundation and designated for the "Angus and Patsy Taylor Fund," an endowment that supports the academic activities of Cowell College.

Those who knew Angus will certainly recall his remarkable achievements during a long and very successful career--and they also will remember with fondness his kindness, humor, and exceptional strength of character. Angus and I enjoyed lengthy conversations on several occasions. He was unfailingly generous with his time, wise and helpful. I will always appreciate his warm welcome to me, and I invite you to join me now in remembering a great leader of the University of California and a wonderful friend.

Sincerely,

M.R.C. Greenwood, Chancellor
