TO THE UCSC CAMPUS COMMUNITY

John Simpson

Dear Colleagues:

As I begin my appointment today as Executive Vice Chancellor, I want to extend my personal greetings to each of you. I can't tell you how pleased and honored I am to have been offered this position at UC Santa Cruz--for me, this is an astonishing opportunity.

My family has long been associated with the University of California. Two of my grandparents, both of my parents, my wife Diane, our daughter Melissa and I all are graduates of this wonderful university. I also have three siblings who are alumni of the University of California. So, you can imagine how much this feels like a homecoming for me.

I have been engaged in public higher education for all of my adult life. Now I have been given the keys to the railroad, and I have been asked to help to run it! For me, this is about as exciting as it can get. I very much look forward to helping guide UCSC into its bright future.

Yet, at the same time, I cannot do this alone. I very much want and need your support and help as, together, we realize the very happy and promising prospects of our institution.

I look forward to getting to know you and to working as partners to build The UC Santa Cruz of the new century.

Sincerely yours,

John B. Simpson
Executive Vice Chancellor
