Re: Retirement of EEO/AA Director Valerie Simmons

Dear Campus Colleagues:

This is to inform you that, after a long and productive career at UCSC, Valerie Simmons, director of the campus's Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action Office, will retire at the end of this month. I invite you to join us for a reception in Valerie's honor on Monday, February 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Women's Center.

Although Valerie's unflagging dedication and strong vision will be missed, her contributions over the past 17 years will continue to make a difference at UCSC long after she leaves. Among her many contributions as a member of both the UCSC faculty and administrative staff, Valerie has taken the lead in developing programs and creating campuswide initiatives concerning sexual harassment, affirmative action, fair hiring practices, diversity education, the Americans with Disabilities Act, career development and other staff training programs, and the revision of human resources policies.

Valerie's position will be filled on an interim basis by Robin Santos, a senior analyst in the EEO/AA Office. A search for a permanent replacement will begin soon.

Please join me in congratulating Valerie on her retirement and on 17 years of outstanding service to UCSC.

Cordially yours,
Julia Armstrong-Zwart
Assistant Chancellor for Human Resources
Assistant Vice Chancellor for Faculty Relations
