With deep sorrow, I send this message to notify you of the tragic death of one of our students.

The body of Matthew David Begbie was discovered in the East Field House Pool at approximately 9:00 a.m. this morning. He was a freshman, age 18. Our deepest sympathy is with his family and friends at this sad time.

UC Santa Cruz Police, in collaboration with the County Sheriff and the Santa Cruz City Police, are investigating the situation. Evidence indicates that the death was accidental. Further communications will follow, as information warrants.

Please join me in a moment of silence to remember Matthew.
