To: The Campus Community

Dear Colleagues:

I would like to advise the campus of an important transition in University Advancement.

Daniel G. Aldrich, III, UC Santa Cruz Assistant Chancellor - University Advancement, has accepted an invitation to work on special projects at the Office of the President, with Bruce B. Darling, Vice President - University and External Relations, and his associates. Dan will begin this assignment January 4, 1999.

I'd like to thank Dan for his many positive contributions to the University, and to congratulate him on receiving the Tribute Award for outstanding achievement from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), District VII, at the CASE regional meeting this week.

The recruitment of a Vice Chancellor - University Relations is moving along, and we anticipate welcoming our newest Vice Chancellor to campus for the next academic year. As this search continues, I have asked Vice Chancellor Tom Vani to serve as Acting Vice Chancellor - University Relations, effective December 15, 1998.

In addition to his current responsibilities as Vice Chancellor - Business & Administrative Services, VC Vani will supervise those areas previously assigned to Assistant Chancellor Aldrich. He will also work with the divisional deans and the UCSC Foundation to undertake a management study and profile review in anticipation of the expanded responsibilities of the new Vice Chancellor - University Relations.

As you know, University Advancement has significantly increased the campus capacity for fund raising in recent years. We have every confidence in the Advancement and Development staff to continue their fine work through this transition period. If the current trend continues, I believe we can look forward to another "bumper year" in private giving to the campus.

Cordially yours,

M.R.C. Greenwood
Chancellor
