Re: Student Affairs Recruitments

I am pleased to announce the result of three national searches for key positions with the Student Affairs Division, effective August 1, 1997. Please help me in welcoming and congratulating:

Alma Sifuentes was selected as College Administrative Officer (CAO) of Stevenson College. Alma is also an alumna (B.A., economics) and received her M.A. in public policy studies from Duke University. She has been on campus since 1990 and has served in various capacities at UCSC: Interim CAO of Stevenson College, Acting Director of Student Organization Advising and Resources (SOAR), and Credential Analyst/Adviser in the Education Department.

Deana Slater was selected as the CAO of Merrill College. Deana comes to us from UC San Diego, where she served as the Resident Dean of Eleanor Roosevelt College and International House. She spent nine years at UC San Diego, and prior to that she worked at Cornell University as the Resident Director of the International Living Center. Deana has a B.A., psychology/family environment and received her M.A. in pastoral studies from Loyola University in New Orleans. She brings to her position over twelve years of experience working in student affairs.

Larry Trujillo was selected as Director of Chicano/Latino Student Life (formerly Academic Coordinator). Larry received his doctorate from UC Berkeley. He will be working on retention programs and academic support programs for underrepresented students, by involving faculty and graduate students to increase the number of students who graduate and go on to attend graduate school. These programs include mentoring, advising, and leadership development. Larry's professional experience and background spans over twenty years as both an administrator and educator at UC Berkeley, where he developed an effective academic success program that has served as a national model for other institutions of higher learning.

Sincerely,

Francisco J. Hernandez
Vice Chancellor
