TO: THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the establishment of the Department of Film and Video, which will formally come into existence on July 1, 1998.

Courses in film were offered at UCSC shortly after the foundation of the campus. Since the early 1970s, Film Studies (with the subsequent inclusion of Video) have been offered through the Theater Arts Department. In 1997 authorization was granted to award a separate B.A. in Film and Video, and the first cohort of 43 students graduated in spring 1997. This year its five-member faculty (Professors Lawrence Andrews, Eli Hollander, Chip Lord, Margaret Morse, and Shelley Stamp) is supervising 215 upper-division majors and will grant an additional 60 bachelor's degrees. In recent years the efforts of the faculty have been coordinated by Professor Eli Hollander, who will be appointed founding chair of the new department in recognition of his leadership.

Please join me in wishing the Department of Film and Video, its faculty, students and staff, every success in the future.

Sincerely,

Edward Houghton, Dean
Division of the Arts
