To: The Campus Community

From: Chancellor Greenwood

It is my pleasure to inform you that, after an extensive national search, John B. Simpson, the dean of Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington, has accepted my offer to become UCSC's next Executive Vice Chancellor. Dr. Simpson's appointment is pending approval by UC's Office of the President and the Board of Regents.

A very distinguished professor of psychology, Dr. Simpson has served the University of Washington since 1975 in a variety of academic and administrative leadership positions. He will bring a wealth of experience to this important position, and I and the members of the Search Committee are thrilled with his acceptance.

As you know, Dr. Simpson will replace R. Michael Tanner, who has served with distinction as the campus's Academic Vice Chancellor or Executive Vice Chancellor since 1989.

A professor of computer science, EVC Tanner is returning to full-time pursuit of his academic specialty, coding theory. Next year he will conduct research on high-speed error correction and engage with colleagues at MIT and Caltech as a visiting professor. On behalf of the campus community, I would like to personally thank Michael for his many years of outstanding service.

In the meantime, I know that you will join me in welcoming John Simpson to UC Santa Cruz. In closing, I would like to thank each and every member of the Search Committee for their dedicated effort on behalf of the campus and for their commitment to such a successful outcome.

Sincerely,

M.R.C. Greenwood
