Re: Academic and Administrative Calendar 1998-99

After consultation with related administrative offices, the Academic Senate, and students, I am pleased to provide to the campus community the Academic and Administrative Calendar for 1998-99.

The Academic and Administrative Calendar for 1998-99 adheres to University of California mandates for days of instruction, final examination periods, and holidays, and to UC Santa Cruz calendar considerations. Developing an Academic and Administrative Calendar to meet the stated desires of each campus constituency is difficult. The Calendar approved for 1998-99 follows patterns established over the last several years by starting late in September and ending by the middle of June. It also allows an adequate break between winter and spring quarters. Meeting all these conditions and constraints typically requires some trade offs: for this year, the opening day of the winter quarter, which is set aside for orientation of new students, will be on a Sunday (a compromise that enabled us to adjourn for summer vacation one week earlier than would otherwise have been possible). I will be asking the Deans and Provosts, in consultation with administrative directors, to examine ways in which this Sunday start date can be implemented to benefit both students and operational needs.

In recent years, the calendar process has become increasingly cumbersome with some campus units expressing concern that their interests are either unacknowledged or in competition with other units. To improve the planning process, I will be appointing a Calendar Task Force to develop new guidelines and principles for calendar development. Once the calendar development guidelines and principles are endorsed, the campus can move forward and develop calendars for at least three years into the future. The Task Force is to include representatives from key Academic Senate committees, divisions, colleges, and administrative units, and will be chaired by University Registrar Cecilia Rodriguez.

Many of you have forwarded thoughtful comments and suggestions for improving the calendar process, this Task Force will consider previously submitted comments and solicit guidance from the campus community.

Sincerely,

R. Michael Tanner
Executive Vice Chancellor
