UCSC anthropology professor Carolyn Martin Shaw (left) acted as master of ceremonies for the convocation, and Erva Bowen of the Santa Cruz chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) delivered the invocation.

Other participants included Chancellor Greenwood, who delivered the welcoming address, and UCSC professor of sociology John Brown Childs, who introduced Dyson.
