Research shows asteroids hard to destroy or deflect
[Computer images of Castalia asteroid] An analysis of collisions between asteroids may help explain the structure and evolution of these small planetary bodies. The study, carried out by a UCSC astronomer with colleagues at other institutions, raises concerns about the feasibility of disrupting or deflecting an asteroid in the event that one is discovered hurtling through space toward Earth.
