In a reception at the Cowell College Dining Hall, Myrlie Evers-Williams meets with a high school student who was brought to the convocation festivities as part of UCSC's outreach efforts. Students at the reception came from Seaside, Salinas, Monterey, San Jose, and the San Joaquin Valley. They later attended the convocation at the Civic Auditorium in downtown Santa Cruz.
