These 15th-century pottery shards from the Rio Grande area of New Mexico carry the intricate glaze decorations typical of the period. Tracing the sources of the lead found in the glazes has enabled UCSC researchers Judith Habicht-Mauche and Russell Flegal to glean new insights into the trading patterns and activities of Native Americans.
