Regents elect chairman to second term
The University of California Board of Regents today (Friday, June 20) elected Los Angeles surgeon Tirso del Junco to a second term as chairman of the board.
The Regents, meeting at UC Irvine, also named Velma Montoya as vice chairman. Both terms begin July 1 and extend for a year.
A Regent since 1985, del Junco has served on all seven of the Regents' standing committees, including 10 years on the Committee on Heath Services. He was chair of that committee for three years.
Del Junco currently is serving a second term as chairman of the Board of Governors of the U.S. Postal Service. He is a founder and former chairman of the Los Angeles National Bank and a member of numerous medical, teaching and professional organizations.
Montoya, a Regent since 1994, is a former member of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission. She has taught at California State Polytechnic University at Pomona and Pepperdine University.
The board also named the following Regents as chairs of the board's standing committees:
Howard H. Leach (audit); Alice J. Gonzales (educational policy); Roy T. Brophy (finance); S. Stephen Nakashima (grounds and buildings); John G. Davies (health services); David S.Lee (investments); Peter Pruess (oversight of the U.S. Department of Energy laboratories).
