Attention: Faculty and other academic appointees

The Office of the President is circulating a draft policy for your review and comment. For a copy of the proposed policy revisions, contact your academic division, Academic Human Resources at (408) 459-4300, or the Office of the President policy Web site.

Proposed technical changes, rescission, deletion, and addition to the APM policies governing payment of stipends (APM 630; APM 631; APM 360-18[a] and 360 Appendix A[C]; and APM 633):

The University of California proposes to have one set of related policies in the Academic Personnel Manual for the payment of administrative stipends to academic appointees.

The proposed new Academic Personnel Policy Section 633, "Administrative Stipends for Academic Appointees," is a general policy statement which would provide for payment of administrative stipends to eligible academic appointees such as deans, provosts, directors, department chairs, academic/faculty assistants, and librarian managers and supervisors who are not in the librarian unit, in recognition of added administrative responsibilities.

It would also provide that chancellors develop local guidelines based on factors such as budgeted department funds and the number of FTE supervised by the appointee.

In addition, the university proposes the following changes in the existing stipend policies in the Academic Personnel Manual:

  1. APM Section 630, "Stipends for Provost, Academic Deans, and Directors" would be retitled to "Guidelines for Compensation of Divisional, Associate, and Assistant Deans, and Directors of Organized Research Units," and revised to delete outdated provisions.

  2. APM Section 631, "Stipends for Department Chairpersons," would be rescinded since it would be superseded by the proposed new APM Section 633, "Administrative Stipends for Academic Appointees."

  3. APM Section 360-18(a) and APM Section 360-Appendix A(C), Librarian Series, would be deleted.

Further details of the proposal can be found online. Comments can be sent to Lori Castro at (408) 459-4779 or at lhcastro@cats.ucsc.edu no later than Monday, June 16.
