This message was issued by Jean-Marie Scott, Porter College administrative officer
On Saturday, April 26, at approximately noon, there was a fire in the Porter College Dishroom which has resulted in extensive damage and a disruption of service. No one was injured in the fire and the Marriott Staff did an exceptional job in responding to the situation and evacuating the students and staff who were in the facility at the time.
The Fire Department responded to the fire and contained most of the damage to the immediate area of the dishroom.
Given the complete destruction of our dishroom and given the timeline for clean up and repair, I am proceeding with the following course:
- The Porter Dining Hall will not be open for scheduled meals through the
remainder of the spring quarter. Students will be fed in College Eight and other
facilities on campus.
- We will continue to utilize the main dining hall for events and activities that are currently scheduled. Porter will not be accepting any additional requests for events for this quarter.
- Other major events such as; Vincent Tinto, GLBTN Fashion Show, Porter Dormal, Graduation, College Nights, Computer Conference, and Summer Advising will continue as scheduled in the dining hall. Where meals are a part of the event, arrangements will be made to bring materials in.
- The faculty and staff meal program that is sponsored by the provost for faculty fellows will be placed on hold until further notice.
- Marriott's will be working with Housing Services to make arrangements for moving all food out of the kitchen area and for reassigning staff to other facilities.
- Housing Facilities, Marriott's and David Sulser will be working to develop a plan for clean up and repair.
