UCSC astronomer wins medal from Royal Astronomical Society
Great Britain's Royal Astronomical Society has awarded the 1997 Gold Medal, its highest honor, to Donald Osterbrock, professor emeritus of astronomy and astrophysics at UCSC and astronomer emeritus at UC Observatories/Lick Observatory. The award recognizes Osterbrock's lifetime achievement in the field of astronomy.

Inaugural lecture focuses on French queen and author
Carla Freccero, a professor of literature and women's studies, will present an Inaugural Lecture titled "Archives in the Fiction: History and Literature in Marguerite de Navarre's Heptameron." The talk takes place at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, on the Performing Arts Second Stage. It is free and open to the public.

Arboretum's spring plant sale blooms April 19
Visitors can choose from more than 200 kinds of drought-resistant and colorful plants at the annual spring plant sales at the UCSC Arboretum. The sales will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 19.

Schedule for conference on journalism
The Future of Journalism, a conference for students and the general public, will take place on Friday, April 18, and Saturday, April 19, at Kresge College. The conference features UCSC alumni who are now in the field of journalism.
