UCSC staff, community earn kudos for participation in United Way

By Francine Tyler

United Way of Santa Cruz County honored UCSC and two of its employees earlier this month for participation in the organization's 1996 fund-raising campaign.

The campus community earned the Gold Award as the highest donor in the education division, said Cary Oliva, director of development for United Way. Nearly 600 members of UCSC's faculty and staff contributed a total of $70,169 this year, an increase of more than $4,000 over last year's total. After Granite Rock Company, UCSC contributed the largest amount of any local organization.

In addition, an interim service center manager in the Student Affairs Division was named "Speaker of the Year" for her work promoting this year's campaign. Rhonda Rhodes spoke to groups at UCSC, Santa Cruz Biotechnology, and other local organizations about how United Way donations support the Battered Women's Task Force at the Walnut Avenue Women's Center, where she is a volunteer. She was also one of two featured speakers at the campaign kickoff luncheon in the fall.

Carol Lacey of the Chancellor's Office, who organized the United Way campaign at UCSC, received a certificate as "outstanding campaign coordinator."
