Poet Maya Angelou to speak at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium

[Photo of Maya Angelou] Santa Cruz audiences are invited to spend an evening with Maya Angelou this month in an event partly sponsored by Crown College and its student government.

"A special evening with Maya Angelou," will take place on Friday, February 21 at 8 p.m. at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. Cosponsored by Crown College, Crown's Committee of Twelve, and Michael Reinhold of Palookaville, the event will include a performance by Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir, a six-member a cappella women's ensemble. UCSC professor of women's studies Akasha Hull will serve as the master of ceremonies.

During her distinguished and long career, Angelou has been a poet, playwright, author, activist, actress, musician, and teacher. In 1993, she read one of her poems for a national audience at President Clinton's first inauguration.

She has also written numerous books of poetry and prose, screenplays, plays, and television specials. Her 1970 novel I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings spent two years on the New York Times Paperback Nonfiction Bestseller list.

Crown students may purchase tickets for $15 each from the Crown Student Activities Office and students not affiliated with Crown may purchase tickets for $20. Tickets are also available at the Civic Auditorium Box Office and at all Bass ticket outlets. Prices range from $24.50 to $50.

A portion of ticket proceeds will benefit Santa Cruz Women's Crisis Support and Shelter Services. For more information, call (408) 454-0600.
