Free poetry reading at UCSC's Chadwick Garden on June 5

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SANTA CRUZ, CA-Enjoy an afternoon of poetry and classical music in the Alan Chadwick Garden at the University of California, Santa Cruz, on Saturday, June 5. The event, "Poetry and Music in the Garden," features readings by six poets from noon until 2 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

The poets who will read their work are:

* Peter Gizzi--Gizzi's recent books include his second collection of poems, Artificial Heart, and a critical work on poet Jack Spicer, titled The House that Jack Built. An assistant professor of literature at UCSC, Gizzi has edited several critically acclaimed projects and has received the prestigious Lavan Younger Poets Award from the Academy of American Poets.

* Nate Mackey--Author of nearly a dozen books and monographs, Mackey is a professor of literature at UCSC. His interest in jazz and African culture informs his critically acclaimed work. His publications include Whatsaid Serif, Song of the Andoumboulou 18-20, School of Udhra, and Djbot Baghostus's Run.

* Tom Marshall--Author of the 1997 book Ugly Beauty: Modern Experiments in Crossing Poetry & Prose, Marshall is a lecturer in the Literature Department at UCSC.

* Amy Stewart-- A Pushcart Prize-nominated poet, Stewart has published in many literary journals. Her garden writing has appeared in such magazines as GreenPrints and The American Gardener.

* Stephen Meadows--Author of The Wildest Place: A Collection of Poetry, Meadows is a longtime resident of Santa Cruz. He is working on a new book of poetry.

* Elizabeth Willis--Author of The Human Abstract, Willis teaches at Mills College in Oakland.

In addition to poetry and music, free food and beverages will be offered.

The main entrance to the Alan Chadwick Garden is located on McLaughlin Drive across from Stevenson College, where free parking will be available. The reading is sponsored by the Friends of the UCSC Farm & Garden, which supports the activities of the UCSC Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems.
