Renowned art historian to discuss African and African-Atlantic art May 14 at UC Santa Cruz

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SANTA CRUZ, CA--One of the world's leading experts in African and African-Atlantic visual cultures will present a free public lecture on the topic on Thursday, May 14, at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

The talk, "Afro-Oceanic Art: Towards a New Century," will be presented by distinguished art historian Robert Farris Thompson, the Colonel Trumbull Professor of the History of Art at Yale University. The talk takes place at 7 p.m. in Social Sciences II-75 and is free and open to the public. A reception follows.

A pioneering scholar in his field, Thompson is the author of numerous influential works including Flash of the Spirit: African and Afro-American Art and Philosophy and Face of the Gods: Art and Altars of Africa and the African Americas. His lecture is free and open to the public.

Thompson's visit is made possible through the Patricia and Rowland Rebele Endowed Chair in art history, which supports scholars-in-residence programs, art history symposia, and special lectures and colloquia for the campus and community. As part of his residency, Thompson will also lead a seminar on Friday, May 15, for faculty and advanced students on "Issues in Black Creativity."
