COMMENCEMENTS JUNE 18-19 FOR UC SANTA CRUZ'S CLASS OF 1994

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SANTA CRUZ, CA-UC Santa Cruz's Class of 1994 will hold commencement exercises on Saturday, June 18, and Sunday, June 19. This year, the following numbers of students are candidates for degrees or graduate certificates: 1,796, bachelor of arts or science degrees; 93, master's degrees; 42, doctorate degrees; and 44, graduate certificates.

Each of UCSC's eight residential colleges holds its own commencement ceremony at various campus locations; the Division of Graduate Studies holds its commencement at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. In addition, the Chicano/Latino and African-American student communities will hold their annual commencement celebrations. The schedule is as follows:

Saturday, June 18

- Porter College commencement ceremonies take place at 10 a.m. in the Porter Quadrangle. The keynote speaker will be professor of art and Art Board chair Joyce Brodsky.

- Oakes College commencement ceremonies take place at 10 a.m. on the East Field. The keynote speaker will be professor of chemistry Frank Andrews.

- Merrill College commencement ceremonies take place at 1 p.m. in the Upper Quarry Amphitheater. The keynote speaker will be University of Southern California vice provost for enrollment Joe Allen, formerly dean of admissions at UC Santa Cruz.

- Cowell College commencement ceremonies take place at 3 p.m. at the college. The keynote speaker will be professor emerita of theater arts Audrey Stanley.

- College Eight commencement ceremonies take place at 4 p.m. in the College Eight plaza. The keynote speaker will be professor of environmental planning and acting chair of environmental studies James Pepper.

- Kresge College commencement ceremonies take place at 5 p.m. in the Upper Quarry Amphitheater. The keynote speaker will be lecturer in writing Roz Spafford.

- The annual African-American commencement celebration will take place at 6 p.m. in the Performing Arts Theater.

Sunday, June 19

- Crown College commencement ceremonies take place at 10:30 a.m. in the Upper Quarry Amphitheater. The keynote speaker will be Natural Reserve coordinator Margaret Fusari.

- Stevenson College commencement ceremonies take place at 11 a.m. on the East Field. The keynote speaker will be professor of philosophy and Stevenson provost Carlos Noreña.

- The Division of Graduate Studies will hold its commencement ceremonies at 1:30 p.m. in the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, 307 Church Street, Santa Cruz. The keynote speaker will be professor of earth sciences and associate vice chancellor for research James Gill.

- The annual Chicano/Latino commencement celebration will take place at 3 p.m. on the East Field. The keynote speaker will be founding artistic director and playwright Luis Valdez of El Teatro Campesino.
