"David Krakauer's sensitive artistry brings the repertoire under new
light and he communicates an energy that goes beyond limits of
creativity. Simply put, he plays the clarinet miraculously." --The Clarinet

UC Santa Cruz Arts & Lectures presents international clarinet superstar David Krakauer with his spirited ensemble Klezmer Madness! at the UC Santa Cruz Music Center Recital Hall on Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at 8:00pm. While honoring the traditional roots of klezmer music, David Krakauer and his quintet integrate elements of jazz, rock and funk to make Klezmer Madness! one of the foremost ensembles of a booming klezmer revival.

PERFORMANCE
The soulful sound of David Krakauer’s clarinet connects the villages of nineteenth-century East European Jewry with the vital rhythms of contemporary klezmer. Known for his mastery of myriad styles including classical chamber music, Eastern European klezmer music, the avant-garde, rock and jazz, internationally acclaimed clarinetist David Krakauer lies way beyond "cross-over." He is an emotionally raw but genial presence who plays with tireless spirit, humor and generosity. "The yowling, swirling clarinet of David Krakauer leads the ensemble and his performance in particular is stunning - he really bends a note to thrilling effect." – Classic CD (UK)

The audience is invited to stay after the performance for a Meet-the-Artist discussion!

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
In addition to a busy touring schedule with Klezmer Madness!, David Krakauer is in demand worldwide as a guest soloist with ensembles such as the Kronos Quartet, the Berlin Radio Orchestra, the Tokyo String Quartet, the Eroica Trio, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. His recordings on Nonesuch, Tzadik, Label Bleu (Harmonia Mundi, U.S.A.) and Angel (with Itzhak Perlman and the Klezmatics) are among the most important klezmer releases of the last decade. His latest album, A New Hot One, has been hailed throughout Europe as a masterwork and garnered four prestigious awards including the Diapason d'Or. About the album France's Jazz Magazine wrote "This CD is magnificent, ferocious...Krakauer could be for klezmer what Piazzolla was for tango." Krakauer is currently a faculty member of the Manhattan School of Music and Mannes College.
