"Julianne Baird is a vocal phenomenon. . . a rare and wondrous voice
guided by an extraordinary musical intelligence." --Fanfare

UC Santa Cruz Arts & Lectures presents the darling of early music and one of the most recorded women in America, soprano Julianne Baird at the UC Santa Cruz Music Center Recital Hall on Friday, February 8, 2002 at 8:00pm. Considered one of the most extraordinary voices in the service of early music, Julianne Baird possesses a remarkable natural musicianship that engenders singing of supremely expressive beauty.

PERFORMANCE
Julianne Bairdís performance for the Arts & Lectures series is also the opening evening of the 2002 Santa Cruz Baroque Festival. Bairdís program, titled Celtic Caravans: The Road to Romanticism, is a lovely prelude to Valentine's Day featuring folk songs of the British Isles set by Haydn. Baird will be accompanied by UCSC Professor of Music and Santa Cruz Baroque Festival Artistic Director Linda Burman-Hall on fortepiano. Arts & Lectures is pleased to invite the audience to remain after the performance for a Meet-the-Artist discussion with Julianne Baird, who is recognized internationally as one of the few who can both demonstrate the full range of the singer's art and explain it.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
With nearly 100 recordings to her credit on Decca, Deutsche Gramophone, Newport Classics and Dorian, soprano Julianne Baird is considered one of Americaís most recorded women. Critical acclaim for Julianne Baird glows with praise. "Ms. Baird floats tones on a column of air with a purity and dead-center intonation that are astonishing." --The Pittsburgh Press

Baird reaches large audiences through regional and national broadcasts including a recent featured interview on Terry Gross' internationally syndicated Fresh Air. A distinguished professor at Rutgers University, Bairdís most recent recording, Janeís Hand: The Jane Austen Songbooks on VOX Records, features the narrated words of Jane Austen and the music of her time sung to perfection.

An active teacher and scholar, Baird holds degrees from the Eastman School and a Diploma from the Salzburg Mozarteum in performance as well as a Ph.D. in music history from Stanford University. Appearing as soloist with major symphony orchestras including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra, Baird is scheduled to appear in April, 2002 in Chicagoís Symphony Hall in Haydnís Creation and in May in the Kennedy Center.
