December 19, 2001 Arts and Lectures presents The Arden Trio on January 11For Release Immediately UC SANTA CRUZ ARTS & LECTURES presents THE ARDEN TRIO DETAILS "The Arden Trio played with elegance and warmth - separately intertwined." --New York Times UC Santa Cruz Arts & Lectures presents The Arden Trio playing An Evening of Firsts at Holy Cross Church, on Friday, January 11 at 8:00pm. For novices and experts alike, the Arden has developed a reputation for giving the highest quality presentations while performing in a less formal style, sharing personal anecdotes, and historical and stylistic narrative. They are also good-humored, and frequently funny. This Evening of Firsts is named so because all three pieces on the program are the first works by each composer for piano trio. The concert and post-performance talk with this engaging group is guaranteed to be easy-going, stimulating and will leave you with many clues to understanding the intricacies of the art of chamber music. For this UCSC Arts & Lectures presentation The Arden Trio has chosen to perform the Beethoven piano trio, Op. 1, No. 1, the Ravel piano trio of 1914 and a newly commissioned work titled Typical Music by the composer (and Paul Simon touring band member), Evan Ziporyn. Ziporyn's new (and first!) trio, Typical Music, is a West Coast premiere for the work which is a commission of the New York-based Meet the Composer Foundation. In it, Ziporyn combines elements of world music with more familiar forms of American music and the classical tradition to form an utterly new, original, and viscerally immediate work. The audience is invited to stay after the performance for a Meet-the-Artist discussion! Leaders in their field, The Arden Trio, Suzanne Ornstein (violin), Clay Ruede (cello) and Thomas Schmidt (piano), has become one of the most notable piano trios on the concert stage today. As winners of the Concert Artists Guild Award, the Trio's New York debut prompted Edward Rothstein of the New York Times to claim that the Arden seems to be "....not a piano trio at all, but a single musical instrument, played with eminent virtuosity and sensitivity." Subsequent New York performances include appearances at the 92nd Street Y, the Mostly Mozart Festival, Merkin Concert Hall, the Morgan Library, and most recently at Alice Tully Hall, as soloists with the Little Orchestra Society. The Trio has also developed a wide range of engaging and informative presentations that have won the endorsement of chamber music organizations throughout the United States, including collaborations with New York City's 92nd Street Y and the Sun Valley Center for the Arts.
